My dark mode design improved when I stopped using pure black.

Gray is definitely easier on the eyes.

Totally agree with moving away from pure black. Karen649 is right about gray being easier, it cuts down on that harsh contrast. I found a dark charcoal background with off-white text works way better for long reading sessions. It just feels less straining, you know? What gray shades do you usually lean toward?

Yeah, slate gray is my go-to for that same reason. It has enough depth to feel cozy but none of that harsh blue light you get from darker shades. I use it for my e-reader background and it just feels easier when you're staring at screens all evening. Ever try that combo with a warm cream text? It adjusts for different lighting so well.
