Reading an old CSS book from 2011 made me miss the dark theme struggles
Found a copy of Dan Cederholm's book from 2011 at a used store last weekend, back when dark themes meant hex codes like #111 and hoping your monitor gamma wasn't lying. It talked about testing contrast on CRT screens and using grayscale first for layouts, which felt ancient but also reminded me how lazy I've gotten with modern tools. These days I just slap on a color picker and call it done, but that book pushed me to actually check my dark mode against real text samples at 3 different brightness levels. Took me maybe 20 minutes to redo a sidebar palette I thought was fine, and the difference was noticeable on my phone outdoors. Anyone else look back at old design methods and feel like we lost some careful habits, or is it just me? Has anyone tried building a dark theme with only 2 shades of grey plus an accent color, like they used to recommend for speed?
