Unpopular opinion: pure black backgrounds in dark mode are harder on my eyes than a dark gray
I was chatting with a friend who does UI work for a medical app last week. He told me their team tested pure black (#000000) against a dark charcoal and users reported 30% less eye strain with the gray. That hit different because I always assumed black was the gold standard for dark themes. Now I'm rethinking my whole approach after trying a dark gray background on my own site for two days. The text feels less harsh and I don't get that weird afterimage effect when I look away. Has anyone else found a specific hex value that works better for your projects?

Load up a color picker and try something in the #1a1a2e or #1e1e24 range. That's what I ended up using after testing a bunch of options from a dev YouTube channel. Pure black feels like it's sucking the light out of the room, but those slightly blue or warm dark grays actually make the text pop without that eye fatigue. I read somewhere that pure black screens can cause the pupils to dilate more, which messes with focus on white text. Might be bro science but switching to a dark charcoal fixed my headaches after late night coding sessions. The afterimage thing stopped completely for me too once I ditched #000000.

Oh wow, my grandma always said staring at white snow gives you the same strain thing. Weird how that connects.
