Heard a print shop owner say he still proofs everything on matte paper before switching to gloss

This guy in Chicago mentioned he catches about 1 in 20 color shifts that way. I always just eyeballed it on screen-has anyone else had bad luck skipping the physical proof step?

Used to think proofs were a waste of time and money but this totally changed my mind. Might start doing this myself now.

Read somewhere that even big shops do a matte proof run first.
