Just figured out the problem with my gradient backgrounds...

Overheard a guy at the print shop say logos need to work in black and white first before color. I redid my whole last project in grayscale and now the gradients actually pop instead of looking muddy.

Nah, that sounds like overthinking it for most stuff. Gradients are just a tool, not that deep unless you're designing for a gas station sign or something.
