Talked to a retired printer about registration marks last Tuesday and it made me realize how much I take digital alignment for granted

He said he used to spend 20 minutes per job just eyeballing cyan and magenta crosses with a loupe, and now I get annoyed when my PDF bleeds are off by 0.01 inches, so has anyone else had their workflow humbled by someone who worked with film?

Respectfully, I see it a little differently on the "humbled" part. Yeah, 20 minutes with a loupe is brutal, but I've had to re-do plenty of digital jobs because a printer's rip mangled my files in ways that the old film guys never dealt with. Their skill was insane, sure, but I'll take a 0.01 inch bleed fight over hunting for a dot that's 0.001 inch off any day of the week.

Oh man, the "dot that's 0.001 inch off" part hit home... I've spent whole afternoons chasing a registration issue on a digital press that nobody could see but the RIP hated it. You can have all the respect in the world for the old film guys but I'll take a bleed issue any day over that nightmare.
