Contractor told me my baseboard miters were sloppy on a job in Denver last month
He said to cut them a hair long and sneak up on the fit instead of trying for perfect the first time, and after the next three joints came out tight I stopped arguing about it.

yeah but did he actually show you how to measure that "hair long" or did he just leave you guessing? cause that's the part that always gets me, everyone says sneak up on it but nobody tells you how much to sneak by. i mean i've had guys tell me 1/64th over and then you go to fit it and it's still gappy or it's too tight and splits the wood. maybe it's just me but that advice always sounds way simpler than it actually is in practice.

@river183 that "hair long" stuff works until your hair and their hair measure different.
