Warning: My sister-in-law said open shelving is a mistake and I didn't listen

We were in my new kitchen in Cincinnati last year, right after I put up those trendy open shelves. She looked at them, then at my everyday plates, and said, 'You're going to be dusting those twice a week.' I laughed it off, thinking she was just being fussy. Fast forward six months, and she was completely right. Everything gets a fine layer of grease and dust, and my nice mugs look messy. Has anyone found a good-looking way to cover open shelves, or is the only fix taking them down?

My aunt in Cleveland uses simple linen curtains on tension rods.

Your aunt in Cleveland has the right idea, @blake_murphy61. I read an article last week that said linen is a great choice for curtains because it lets light through but still gives some privacy. Tension rods are smart too, they don't damage the window frames at all. The article mentioned that a simple setup like that can make a room feel bigger and less cluttered. It's a clean look that doesn't cost a lot of money. More people should try that instead of buying heavy, complicated curtain sets.

Ha, my curtains are so heavy they probably need their own support beams.
