Grid systems are overrated for web layouts - I switched to asymmetry last month

Everyone kept pushing 12-column grids like they were the only way. I had this landing page project for a local bakery in Denver that just felt stiff no matter what I did. On a whim I threw out the grid entirely and started placing elements by eye based on the content flow. The client loved it and bounce rate dropped 15% in the first week. Has anyone else ditched grids for a more organic approach? What kind of projects does that actually work for?

Oh man, I tried this once and ended up with a site that looked like it was designed by a toddler on a sugar high. Your mileage may vary of course but for me it worked great on a small portfolio site where I was showing like 5 paintings and a bio. The client was happy but I spent three extra days just tweaking margins by pixel because my eyes kept playing tricks on me. Grids make me feel lazy in a good way, but asymmetry definitely has its place for projects that want to feel more human and less like a spreadsheet.

Wait, three extra days just on margins? That sounds like a nightmare honestly. I thought throwing out the grid was supposed to save time, not turn into pixel-wrangling regression testing. Your client must have been really patient, or your rates are way too low.
