It was 3 months ago at a startup in Denver. We had a design system built with a popular CSS-in-JS runtime, and everything seemed fine at first. Then we ran Lighthouse on our main dashboard page and the performance score dropped from 85 to 42. Turns out that library was injecting styles at runtime for every component, even unused ones. Tried to standardize button padding across 12 apps and my lead dev almost quit

I spent a whole weekend measuring all the padding on buttons in our design system. Found that 8 out of 12 apps used different spacing for the same primary button. I made this nice spreadsheet showing the gaps and brought it to our Monday standup. My lead dev just stared at me and said 'you know we have 400 other tickets right now right?' Then he went on a 5 minute rant about how button padding doesnt matter when users cant even find the checkout flow. I get it we have bigger issues but now im paranoid every time I open Figma. Stop naming your components by their current position on the page

I keep seeing teams build design systems where they name things like 'HeaderButton' or 'SidebarCard' and it drives me crazy. At my last job we had a button that was called 'ProfileMenuButton' for 6 months until the design team moved the profile to a different part of the screen. Then we had to rename it across 40 files and update all the references. A button is a button no matter where it sits on the page. Name it by what it does like 'LogoutButton' or 'SaveButton' not where it lives on the screen. I learned this the hard way after we did a complete layout redesign and half our components had outdated location based names. Has anyone else dealt with renaming a whole batch of components because of this?
