Stuck in a design system standoff with my dev team

We're building a new dashboard and half the team wants to stick to our standard buttons and colors, but the other half keeps making custom ones for 'better flow'. I get both sides, but now our UI looks patchy and I'm not sure who's right. When do you let projects drift from the system, and when do you lock it down?

But are you guys even using the same rulebook? In my experience, you need a clear, agreed-upon rule for when it's okay to break the system. Does your team have one? Like, maybe a complex multi-step workflow gets a custom button, but a basic form submit doesn't. Without that, you're just fighting over opinions.
