I finally ditched the 12-column grid for a 6-column one

Last week I redesigned a small event flyer for a friend's band in Nashville, and everyone online swears by 12-column grids for flexibility. But I kept staring at my layout and it felt scattered, like the text and images were just floating with no anchor. So I switched to a 6-column grid instead, and suddenly every element had a clear place, with bigger gaps that made the whole thing breathe. It took about 4 hours of reworking blocks, but the final poster looked way stronger than anything I made with 12. I know the advice is always 'more columns means more control,' but for a simple one-page design, fewer columns gave me fewer choices, which honestly helped me commit faster. Has anyone else tried stepping down a grid size when the standard felt overwhelming, or am I the only one who finds less structure easier to work with at first?

Man, I feel this so hard! I did the same thing with a menu for a local diner last month. Twelve columns gave me all these tiny little text blocks that kept jumping around, but when I dropped to six, I could finally group the sections without overthinking every gap. The spacing got chunkier and more confident, like the whole page just settled down. Plus, making it responsive was actually easier since I had bigger jumps to work with instead of trying to fine-tune a million breakpoints. Sometimes having less to fiddle with is the real win.
