My old boss said my 5-year plan was useless and he was right

At a company retreat in Austin, my supervisor told me to stop planning so far ahead and just focus on the next 90 days. I thought he was being lazy, but I tried it for 6 months and got more done than the previous 2 years combined. Now I break everything into 3 month chunks and it actually works. Has anyone else found long term planning to be a waste of time?

Remember a few years back @elizabeth_chen my neighbor decided to rebuild his deck over a long weekend. Took him three months of Saturdays and he still used the wrong kind of wood and it rotted out in a year. Building is like that sometimes, when you push too fast corners get cut and things fall apart. I'd be real careful about anyone promising that kind of speed, unless they have a track record to back it up.
