Walked away from a stable job offer to freelance and nearly broke myself month one
Six months ago I had two paths in front of me: take a cushy $65k design role at a local agency or go full freelance with just one client lined up. I chose the freelance route because I wanted control over my schedule and the projects I worked on. Month one hit and I only made $800 before expenses, my savings account dropped to $400 and I was eating rice and beans for three weeks straight. The client I banked on delayed payment by 45 days which almost made me call the agency back to beg. Now six months in I'm averaging about $4k a month but the stress of that first month still sticks with me. Has anyone else gambled on a career pivot like this and nearly regretted it before things turned around?

Bought a rice cooker and a bag of beans and called it a "strategic investment" in my freelance career. Nothing builds character like googling "can you eat expired ramen" at 2am while your last client payment is just sitting there in "pending" purgatory for no reason. The stress of that first month is basically a free trial of what bankruptcy feels like but without the paperwork.

Pending purgatory" hits hard. That's all modern work now.

I saw this article about how freelancers actually take way longer to get stable than people realize. The average is like six months to a year before the income smooths out. Sounds like you're right on track but that first month is brutal because nobody warns you about the payment gaps, just the freedom side. The pending payment thing is honestly the worst part of this whole setup.
