Chat with a lighting guy made me redo my whole desk lamp setup

Ran into a studio lighting tech at a coffee shop last week and he kept going on about how even ambient light matters more than a bright direct lamp for reducing eye strain. He said something like 'you're fighting your overhead lights, not helping them.' Swapped my single desk lamp for two cheap dimmable floor lamps pointing at the wall and my eyes feel way less cooked after 8 hours. Anyone else tried bouncing light off the wall instead of aiming it at your keyboard?

1100 lumens per bulb is where I landed after some trial and error. Too bright and it just felt like the wall was glowing at me.

Saw a buddy of mine try those 2000 lumen bulbs in his living room and he said it felt like he was getting interrogated every time he sat down. Couldn't sit in there for more than ten minutes without getting a headache. He swapped them out for something closer to where you landed and said it was night and day. So yeah, there's definitely a sweet spot where it stops being practical and starts feeling like a crime scene. Did you find that the color temperature made a difference for you too?
