Found out 60% of users skip auto-play video intros on landing pages
I was reading a UX study from Nielsen Norman Group last night and it said 60% of people leave a site immediately if a video auto-plays with sound. That surprised me because I've always thought video hero sections were the way to go for portfolios. Are we wasting time building these heavy video blocks or do they still work for certain projects?

Drives me nuts when I walk into a store and a giant screen blasts ads at me from the ceiling.

my buddy runs a small web design shop and he told me about a client who insisted on this huge cinematic video intro for their luxury real estate site. spent like three grand on the footage and another two on the custom player. they launched it and watched the analytics for a month and literally 90% of visitors clicked off before the video even loaded all the way. he said the bounce rate was insane, like 80%+ on mobile especially. they ended up ripping the whole thing out and replacing it with a simple hero image and a tagline and conversions actually went up. now he swears by keeping anything that moves or makes noise as an option, never an autoplay thing. i think those yt pre-roll ads trained everyone to just flee the second something starts playing.
