Serious question, should we always default to high-contrast color schemes?

My team's new app got praised by a low-vision tester but a coworker with Irlen syndrome said the stark black and white gave her headaches after 30 minutes. Where do you draw the line between contrast needs and sensory overload?

Used to push for maximum contrast on every project. A designer friend with light sensitivity finally sat me down and explained how painful it can be. Now I believe the line is giving users a choice. Build your default for good contrast, but include a simple toggle for a softer theme. It doesn't have to be a full builder, just one calm option. That middle ground seems to help the most people.

Exactly, and that toggle should be the first thing you build, not an afterthought.
