Talked to an old fleet manager and it flipped my thinking on oil change intervals

Last month I was swapping injectors on a 6.7 Cummins for a local delivery company, and the owner told me he had his fleet running 40k mile oil changes for years. I almost laughed, thinking he was crazy. But he showed me his records, blackstone labs results, everything. The oil analysis was clean, and those trucks were going 800k miles before needing overhauls. It made me question everything I was taught in school about 15k mile intervals being the max. Now I'm wondering how many of us are just doing what we were told without looking at the actual data. Has anyone else tried pushing intervals based on analysis instead of just the standard rule of thumb?

Looking at the actual data" is the key part. It's like everything else these days, people just follow old rules without checking if they still make sense.

Yes, "following old rules without checking" is such a good way to put it. I see it everywhere, especially in my own little world. So many people just do things the way they've always done them, even when the world has totally changed around them. I recently saw someone insist on a process from ten years ago that just doesn't apply anymore, and they got defensive when I pointed out the numbers had shifted. It's like we're all afraid to admit the old way might be broken, you know? Have you seen this in any specific area that really drives you nuts?
