I thought power sanders were for amateurs until a tight deadline proved me wrong
I avoided them for years because of the dust cloud. Now I see they cut sanding time in half and give a smoother finish.

Saw a DIY blog post a while back that totally changed my mind on power sanders. The writer went on about how the dust clouds are a nightmare if you don't have the right setup, but with a good vacuum attachment, it's like night and day. I was always scared of making a mess in my garage, you know? But after reading that, I tried hooking my sander up to my shop vac, and wow, what a difference. It still gets dusty, but nowhere near as bad, and the job gets done so much faster. Honestly, once you get past the initial fear, these tools are a game changer for any big sanding project.

I avoided power sanders for the same reason, the dust seemed like too much trouble. Then I had to refinish some floors under a time crunch and borrowed a friend's sander. It cut the work down by more than half and the finish was surprisingly smooth. The dust collection attachments make a big difference if you set them up right. Now I get why people swear by them, even with the cleanup.

Wait, were you using a handheld sander or a big floor model? The big floor sanders almost never have good built-in dust bags, you really need to hook them up to a shop vac. Did your friend's setup have that?
