TIL a crew in Phoenix is using 1/4 inch drywall on ceilings with no bowing

Stopped by a job site my buddy works at last week and saw them hanging 1/4 inch board on a 12 foot ceiling with zero sag, anyone else seeing more builders ditch 1/2 inch for lighter stuff or is this just a desert thing?

Wonder if they're using 5/8" on the walls to compensate for the fire rating loss.

Back in 2019, we had a job in Boulder County where the inspector flagged the same thing on a townhouse project. @mila_jones39 is right to wonder about that 5/8" substitution. We ended up using 5/8" Type X on the garage fire walls and it passed without any extra hassle. Just make sure the framing is deep enough to handle the thicker board without bowing the joints.
