Installed a three-way switch backwards for 8 years before a homeowner caught it

I had been wiring three-way switches the same way since trade school, always putting the common wire on the wrong screw because my first mentor showed me that way. Last month while finishing a kitchen rewire in a 1970s ranch, the homeowner asked why the lights were acting weird and showed me a diagram that proved I had been doing it backwards all along. Has anyone else had a moment where you found out one of your earliest lessons was flat out wrong?

Wait, so you are saying the common goes on the dark screw every time?
