My foreman said to always check the governor rope tension first, even if the call is for door issues.
I got a call for a sticking door on a 15 story office building downtown. I was ready to dive into the door operator, but I remembered his advice and checked the governor in the machine room. The rope was way too loose, which was throwing off the whole safety circuit. Tightened it up and the door problem went away. Anyone else had a simple check fix a bigger seeming issue?

Your foreman was right on the money. It's easy to get tunnel vision and chase the symptom the tenant reported. I've been burned by that before, wasting an hour on a door adjustment only to find a sheave alignment issue in the penthouse. Starting with the basics, especially governor and rope tension, saves so much headache. Good on you for listening and checking the simple stuff first.

Tell me about it. I spent a whole morning once chasing a weird noise complaint, only to find out the problem was just a loose tension weight in the pit (I felt like a total rookie). It's crazy how often the fix is something simple you skip because the tenant's description sends you down a rabbit hole. Your foreman giving that advice is pure gold, saves so much time and frustration. Now I make myself run through the basic checklist every single time, even if I'm sure I know what's wrong.
