My neighbor's 75 cent lentil trick changed my meal planning

I was complaining to my neighbor Carol last week about how my grocery bill was getting out of hand, and she just looked at me and said 'you're overthinking it, honey.' She showed me how she buys a bag of dried lentils for 75 cents at the bulk bin at our local Food City here in Phoenix. She soaks them overnight, then uses them to stretch out ground beef in tacos, meatloaf, even spaghetti sauce. I tried it with her recipe for lentil tacos and my family didn't even notice the difference. It cut my meat usage in half for those meals, saving me like $8 a week easy. Has anyone else found a simple swap like this that actually works without making things taste weird?

My brother told me I was overthinking my career change - he was right

I spent 6 months reading self help books and making spreadsheets about switching from concrete work to graphic design. My brother Mike sat me down and said 'you're just scared to make mistakes like the rest of us.' So I signed up for a $200 community college class in Austin last fall and just started. PSA: My monitor arm almost took out my cat last Tuesday

I was in my home office in Portland adjusting my dual monitor arm setup (you know the heavy gas spring kind) and I didn't tighten the clamp enough. Around 2pm my tabby jumped up on the desk to say hi and the whole thing tipped forward. Scared the heck out of both of us. The left monitor landed on a stack of sketchbooks so no damage but now I triple check that clamp every morning. Has anyone else had a near miss with their desk gear and a pet?

Hot take: I think most barbers in my city are charging way too little for a basic cut.

I saw a post from a shop downtown advertising a $15 fade, and honestly, it's killing the trade for the rest of us who need to pay rent. We're skilled workers, not a discount service, and setting the price that low just tells people our time isn't valuable. How do you even make a living wage at that rate without rushing through every single head?

Warning: I heard a guy at the parts counter say 'I never check the door switch first'

I was picking up a thermal fuse in Springfield last week and the repairman ahead of me was bragging about how he always starts with the control board on a no-heat dryer call. He said it saves him time. I think that's a fast way to waste a customer's money and your own time. The door switch is a five-minute check with a meter, and it's the most common fail point on half the models out there. How many of you still follow the simple checks first, or are we all just jumping to the expensive parts now?

My collection hit about 500 books and I could never find anything. I tried sorting by character, then by publisher, but it was a mess. Tried a new way to quench my last batch of knives and the difference is huge

For years I've been quenching my 1084 steel blades in just plain old vegetable oil, the kind from the grocery store. It worked okay, but I always had some warping and the hardness wasn't as even as I wanted. Last month, I finally bought a 5-gallon pail of Parks 50 quench oil after hearing other smiths talk about it. I used it on three identical hunter blades I forged last week. The result was night and day. The Parks oil cooled the steel way faster and more evenly. All three blades came out straight as an arrow, and my file skated off the edge like glass. I didn't have to spend any time straightening them, which saved me a good hour of work. The cost was about $120 for the pail, but it's already worth it for the time and steel I'm not wasting. Has anyone else made a switch like this and been shocked by the improvement?
