My $500 paint job on the garage door peeled in under a year

I got a quote from a local painter to do the garage door only, thinking it was a small job. He used a cheap exterior paint without a primer, even though I asked about it. After a wet winter, the paint started to bubble and peel off in big sheets. Has anyone had better luck with a specific type of paint for garage doors?
