I thought those new hoof testers were just a gimmick

A farrier I work with in Springfield kept telling me to try his digital pressure testers, saying they showed issues I was missing. I finally borrowed them on a tricky case last week, a horse that kept throwing shoes. The readout showed a pressure point at 78 psi right where the quarter was sore, something my hands didn't pick up. I adjusted my trim there and the horse has been sound for ten days now. Has anyone else had a tool they doubted completely change their approach?

My old boss in Lexington swore by thermal cameras for saddle fitting. I laughed until I saw the cold spots under a perfectly fitted pad. Now I scan every new client's tack setup.

That 78 psi reading is a solid example. I used to think tools like that just gave you numbers for things you already felt. But sometimes your hands get used to a certain feel and miss subtle changes. It's like how morgan.cameron mentioned thermal cameras showing cold spots you can't feel with your palm. The tech isn't replacing the skill, it's just pointing your attention to the right spot. I'm slower to write off new gear now.

Man, that reminds me of the first time I used a hoof balance stand. I thought it was just extra junk to carry around, but seeing that tilt really showed me a weight shift I was totally blind to. Guess we all have that one tool that proves us wrong.
