My emergency fund saved me from a surprise car repair
The alternator went out on my 2012 Civic yesterday. I wrote a check for $480 from my savings account labeled 'car stuff' without touching my regular budget. Anyone have a separate fund for specific types of emergencies?

Sounds like overkill to me. Ray210's three buckets just seems like extra work for the same money. A big emergency fund covers all that stuff without the hassle.

How many separate savings buckets do you keep? I've got one for car stuff like you, another for home repairs, and a third for medical bills. It makes me feel way less stressed knowing each problem has its own money set aside. Otherwise I'd just see one big number and worry about draining it.
