Overheard a new guy at the Trenton plant say he never checks his respirator seal before a pour

Honestly, that made me stop and show him the soot line inside my old one from a bad fit last year. How do you guys make sure your PPE is actually sealed right?

My foreman at the Gary mill makes us do a fit test monthly.

Check the seal every single time, no excuses. That soot line story is a perfect example of what can go wrong. It only takes one bad fit to mess you up.

Monthly fits are good but that daily check is what saves you when you're in a hurry. Had a guy swear his seal was fine until I had him lean over and blow on the mirror trick. Always do that little test before you step foot on the floor.
