I thought cold email was dead for getting freelance work, but a 3-line template got me a $2k project last month.

I was super skeptical and only sent 20 emails to local businesses I actually liked. One owner replied saying he'd been meaning to update his site for a year. What's a better way to find clients now without feeling spammy?

Try local Facebook groups for small business owners.

Yeah, the local Facebook groups are solid. I found my bookkeeper in one. Just search for groups with your city name plus "small business" or "entrepreneurs." The key is to actually post what you need instead of just lurking.

Honestly, that sounds like a lucky break more than a real strategy. Sending 20 emails and getting one reply is a pretty low hit rate. Maybe just stick to the local groups and actually talk to people instead of blasting out templates.
