People into rocks do this a lot to check what minerals are there. A bit of vinegar or weak acid can show if it's limestone. Saying it's 'random' misses the point of testing. But whatever, I'm just a guy who likes cool stones.

Acid on rocks seems like a lot of work for a hobby. Just pick up the cool looking ones.
