Update: My neighbor waved to me but I've never seen her before
She acted like we chat every day, but I just moved in last month. Has a stranger ever acted too familiar with you out of nowhere?

That move is like the universal signal for "I acknowledge your existence but please don't actually talk to me." @keith10 nailed the modern low-commitment interaction. It's basically social self-defense now.
