How I deal with mixed reviews from movie critics

I get stuck when some critics love a film and others hate it. My solution is to read a few reviews from each side. I look for things they both say. For instance, if both sides note the music is good, I know that's a plus. I did this for a comedy last month, and the soundtrack was fun even if the jokes fell flat. This method helps me set realistic expectations. Now I enjoy movies more.

Totally stole your method last week for that new space robot movie. Read two glowing reviews and two that called it a dumpster fire. They all agreed the special effects were cool but the story was a mess. So I went in expecting pretty lights and nonsense, which is exactly what I got. My friends hated it, but I felt like a genius because my expectations were on the floor. My own personal review system usually involves just hoping for the best, which, shockingly, fails way more often.

You actually enjoyed a comedy where the jokes were bad? That's wild to me. I'd be so annoyed if the main thing in a comedy didn't work. Relying on the soundtrack alone sounds like a pretty rough time.

Totally get where Gavin's coming from, but sometimes the whole VIBE can carry a film even if the jokes are weak. It's more about the feeling you get than each punchline landing.
