PSA: Don't buy a color calibration tool without checking your monitor first

I spent $150 on a fancy calibrator only to find out my monitor's panel was too old and couldn't be properly adjusted. The colors still looked off after the whole process. Anyone know a good way to test a monitor's calibration potential before buying the tool?
