Hot take: I just read that 80% of agency leads come from referrals and I'm shook

I was going through an old report from a consulting firm called 'Agency Benchmarks' that I found online. It said that for most marketing agencies, a full 80% of their new business comes from referrals from past clients. I always thought our website or social media was doing more of the heavy lifting, but looking at our own numbers from the past year, it's basically true. We only landed two new projects from our online ads, but got eight from people our old clients talked to. It makes me wonder if we're putting effort in the wrong places. How do you even build a system to get more of those referrals without being annoying?

Referrals are the real work.

Honestly, I get why that number is so high, but I've always seen it as a sign of a weak pipeline. If you're that dependent on word of mouth, you're one quiet quarter away from real trouble. We made a rule to spend at least 30% of our biz dev time on cold outreach and building our own audience, just to keep the engine running ourselves.

That report is from 2019... a lot has changed since then.
