That outside consultant's advice on client scope cost us $8k in two weeks
Had a guy from a bigger agency in Chicago come in last month to look at our process. He said we were over-delivering on purpose, that we should cut back on revisions and add surcharges for anything past two rounds. Our account manager loved it, pushed hard to adopt it. We rolled it out to three clients right away. Two of them pushed back hard, one left after we invoiced for a third revision they thought was included. Lost about $8k in retained work and one referral. In my experience, scope creep is annoying but clients remember when you nickel and dime them. Anyone else been burned by outside advice that sounded great in theory?
Sounds like that consultant gave you the classic big agency playbook and rode off into the sunset with his check while you ate the damage. Funny how the guy selling the advice never sticks around to watch it blow up in your face. Eight grand and a lost referral is a rough tuition payment for a lesson you already knew. Scope creep bites, sure, but nobody ever left a job because you let them have one extra round on a small fix. The nickel and dime stuff is what makes clients start shopping around, and once they're gone they don't come back. Your account manager owes you a coffee at minimum for that one.
