Had a moment last shift that made me feel like a total fool

I've been torquing landing gear bolts on 737s for like 5 years now... always using the same old drag link setup. Turns out I had the torque sequence backwards the whole time. My lead walked over and just pointed at the manual page 42, showing I was starting at the wrong bolt. Has anyone else had that one stupid habit they never questioned?

Total fool" is right. I always thought reading the manual was for rookies. Changed my mind last week.

That "Total fool" part stings because it's usually the simple stuff that gets you. I've noticed this pattern everywhere now, not just in work. People get comfortable with one way of doing things and just keep repeating it without ever checking if it's right. It's like when someone tells you you've been folding your t-shirts wrong your whole life and suddenly you realize you wasted so much closet space. The worst part is how smug you feel about your little routine right up until the moment someone points out the obvious. Makes you wonder how many other things we're all doing backwards without ever getting caught.
