Replaced a panel battery last month that was only 8 months old...
It was a Powersonic 12v 7ah that tested fine on voltage but dropped to under 5 amps under load, so now I always do a discharge test on every battery swap instead of just trusting the meter, has anyone else had brand new premium batteries fail that fast?

The Powersonic 12v 7ah I pulled out last month was only 6 months old and showed 12.8v resting, but under a 1 amp load it dropped to 2.1 amps in less than 30 seconds. I've started keeping a cheap load tester hooked up to every new battery for the first 24 hours before I even install it. Had a Universal Power Group 12v 9ah last year that tested fine on my meter but failed after two weeks of trickle charging. Now I just assume every new battery is defective until I prove it's not, saves me the return trips.

Had a similar thing happen with a lawn mower battery I bought last spring. Voltage looked fine, but it couldn't even spin the starter more than twice before conking out. Ended up swapping it for a battery from the hardware store's return shelf and that one worked perfectly for two years, go figure.
