Just crunched the numbers and 92% of all anime released before 2000 has never been officially dubbed in English

Saw this stat on a random ANN forum thread from 2018 while looking for old OVA info. Really puts into perspective how much we take modern simuldubs for granted. I grew up on VHS fansubs and it's wild to think most of that stuff still never got an official release here. Anyone else ever look up an old show they remember and find out it's basically lost media in the west?

92% of all anime released before 2000 has never been officially dubbed in English" - that stat is just sad. I grew up on those old VHS fansubs too. So many shows I loved that just vanished. No official release, no digital version, nothing. It's like they never existed in the west at all. Those early anime fans were doing the real work to get stuff over here. Makes me wonder how much great stuff we still never got to see.

Those old VHS fansubs were doing the real work" - yeah, that hits home. I remember sitting in someone's basement watching a grainy copy of Giant Robo that had been passed around so many times the tracking was shot. And now you look it up and it's like it never happened. What gets me is how many of those shows probably had decent masters sitting in some Japanese vault the whole time, just no one thought it was worth the cost to bring them over.
