My sister thinks every anime needs a happy ending, and it's ruining our talks
We were arguing about 'Your Lie in April' and she got really upset. I don't know how to discuss sad shows with her without starting a fight... How do you deal with family who just don't get the shows you like?

Your sister's view misses how sad endings often make stories more meaningful. Shows like Your Lie in April use pain to show real human experiences, not just to upset people. Art doesn't always need happy endings to be good or important. Try explaining why the sad moments mattered to you personally instead of debating the ending. Ask her what she values in stories too, so it's a talk, not a fight. Finding common ground might help you both enjoy discussions more.

Has she told you why she needs every story to end happily? With Your Lie in April specifically, maybe her reaction isn't about the show's quality but about using stories to escape real sadness. If real life is tough, she might just want fiction to be a safe break from that.

Referencing your point about fiction being a safe break, I have to ask, does always needing happy endings mean someone is avoiding dealing with sad feelings in real life? In my experience, sometimes sad stories help me process my own stuff, but your mileage may vary. With Your Lie in April, the sad ending is what made it stick with me, because it felt true to life. But if real life is already full of pain, I get why someone would want stories to be different. So my question is, has she ever talked about what happy endings provide for her that sad ones don't? Like, is it about hope, or control, or something else? Take this with a grain of salt, but understanding that might help see where she's coming from.
