Saw a clip from 90s Evangelion vs the rebuild movies and the voice acting shift is wild

I read somewhere that the voice actors were told to dial it way down for the rebuilds. Apparently the original dub director for Evangelion wanted everyone to sound like they were constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown, which honestly fit the show's vibe. But the newer movies cleaned it up and made the characters sound more like normal teenagers. I get why people prefer the old raw screaming match energy over the polished delivery. The original Shinji sounded like he was barely holding it together, which made the giant robot fights feel more desperate.

Wait the original director actually told them to sound like they were about to snap? That makes so much sense now because Shinji's voice in the old dub felt like he was literally seconds away from crying in every scene. The rebuilds definitely sanded off all those rough edges but man, that raw desperation is what made the original so memorable.
