Used to hate subbed anime until a bad dub ruined a scene
Was watching Attack on Titan season 4 with my roommate last week. The English VA completely missed the emotional beat in a key Eren scene. Switched to subs right after that and never looked back. Anyone else have a dub moment that made you switch?

Oh man, that happened to me with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood! The English voice for Scar just sounded so flat during his big redemption speech that I grabbed my controller and switched languages mid episode. Now I watch almost everything subbed unless the dub gets crazy good reviews like Cowboy Bebop.

I read something recently about how dubbing directors sometimes push actors to match the mouth movements instead of the emotion of the scene. Apparently that was a big issue with some of the FMA Brotherhood dub scenes where characters had to speed up or slow down their lines to fit the animation. That would explain why Scar's speech felt so flat - he probably had to cram his lines into a tight window and lost all the natural pauses and emphasis. English voice actors get blamed a lot but the real problem is usually the script adaptation and direction timing. I ended up watching Brotherhood subbed too for the same reason.

@alice_barnes35 nailed it, the direction is the real killer most times.
