Last Tuesday broke me - 13 hours fighting a monitor arm that just wouldnt stay tight

...until I spent a whole Saturday with a cheap Vivo arm and ended up with a bruised knuckle and a crooked monitor. I used to roll my eyes at people calling monitor arms a nightmare, but honestly I get it now. Something about fighting with a piece of hardware for hours just makes you question all your life choices. You're not being dramatic, sometimes a simple project turns into a battle of wills. Ergotron is expensive but I finally caved and bought one and I haven't touched it since I set it up.

Our Haas VF-2 ate a tool holder last Tuesday... spectacularly

Hold on a second, a collet nut doesn't just "give up" for no reason. That tool holder was likely damaged before you put it in the spindle - a cracked collet or a nut with stripped threads that you missed during inspection. Or maybe the pull stud wasn't torqued right when you installed the holder that morning. Machines don't just decide to launch tooling; ninety-nine times out of a hundred it's a setup error or a worn part that should have been caught. Take some responsibility for your pre-run checks before blaming the equipment.

Decided to switch from a cast steel anvil to a forged one for my main shop anvil.

Oh man, that's a tough lesson to learn firsthand... I really feel for you on that one. The dead ring alone would've driven me crazy, but a chipped face on top of it is just salt in the wound. At least the forged one sounds like it's treating you better so far.

Saw a historic brick chimney in Savannah with a really odd flue layout

Always thought that was a bad idea... until I saw one still working.

Question about cutting carpet around a tricky floor vent

Smart move with the template. I've even traced the vent itself right onto the carpet backing before, works like a charm for those weird angles.
