Last Tuesday my desk lamp died at 3pm and I nearly gave up
I was mid video call when my gooseneck lamp flickered out, leaving my whole corner in shadow and my monitor glare unbearable. Turns out the bulb was fine, the wiring inside the base had corroded after 4 years of daily use. Has anyone switched to a clip on style light or did you just replace the whole lamp?

That bit about the corroded wiring inside the base is the real killer, because the bulb being fine makes you think it's a quick fix and then nope, it's the whole thing. Four years of daily use is actually pretty good for a cheap lamp, the heat cycles slowly cook the contacts and once that corrosion sets in you can't really scrub it out. A clip on might just put you in the same spot later though, since the clamp spring wears out and the jaws get loose, so you end up with a light that slowly slides down your shelf. If you go that route, look for one with a metal clamp instead of plastic, the plastic ones crack right where the screw tightens. Honestly replacing the lamp every few years might be less annoying than chasing the problem.

Doesn't it always turn out to be the thing you can't even see or fix? The idea of just buying a new one every few years actually sounds way less frustrating than fighting a clamp that slowly gives up on you.
