Just read in an old trade journal that over 70% of dryer fires start from lint buildup in the exhaust duct, not the machine itself.

But the duct is where the heat gets trapped.

Actually, that stat about the exhaust duct is a bit off... most fire reports I've seen say the lint trap inside the dryer itself is the most common ignition point. The duct just spreads the fire once it starts. Cleaning the trap after every load is the real key.

So you're telling me a bit of fluff in a metal box is a major fire risk? I've seen those lint traps get pretty full without anything bad happening. It feels like one of those safety things that gets blown out of proportion. My old dryer ran for years and I barely cleaned the thing. Maybe it's a bigger deal with really old machines or something.
