The day I figured out I was overfilling refrigerators for 2 years
I was doing a warranty call on a Whirlpool fridge in a house out near Dubuque last month. The customer said it was leaking water and making weird noises. I spent like 45 minutes checking the drain tube, the defrost timer, the evaporator fan. Couldn't figure it out. Then the homeowner's kid comes over and says 'my ice cream is always soft too.' That's when it hit me. I looked at the condenser coils and they were spotless, but the fridge was packed so full the door could barely close. I had been telling people to load their fridges up for years because it helps maintain temp. Turns out that's only true if there is air circulation. I had to explain to this lady that I was the one giving her bad advice the whole time. Has anyone else given out a tip that you later found out was totally backwards?

My cousin used to swear you had to wash new jeans with salt to set the dye. Turned out he'd been making everyone's jeans stiff and crusty for no reason for like a decade.

Oh man, I've been the village idiot on more than one occasion myself.
