Appreciation post: I swore drone shots over Phoenix looked fake until I flew the same route myself
I always rolled my eyes at those smooth aerial reels of Camelback Mountain, figured people were slapping on some filter and calling it cinema. Last month a realtor hired me for a $600 listing video and I borrowed a buddy's drone to shoot the neighborhood at sunset. My first three flights came back so shaky they made me dizzy, so I dropped the speed to a crawl and locked the exposure myself instead of trusting auto. The footage still looked nothing like those viral clips, and that's when it hit me: the good ones aren't magic, they're just flying way slower than I was. Anyone here got a shutter speed rule they actually stick to when the wind picks up?
Man, I feel this. I shot real estate stuff for a year and my first drone clips were total garbage. What fixed it for me was setting shutter to double my frame rate, so 1/60 at 30fps, and just leaving it there. Then I got a cheap ND filter set and that was the real trick, because in Phoenix sun you can't slow the shutter without blowing out the sky. When the wind kicks up I bump the ISO a bit and keep that shutter locked, since messing with it mid flight makes the whole clip look weird. Slower is right though. I fly at like 2 mph now and everything looks way smoother.
