Spent 5 years torquing lug nuts in the wrong order - a customer's tire shop receipt tipped me off

I always just went clockwise because it seemed faster and never had issues. Then a guy handed me a receipt from Tire Kingdom that literally said "cross-pattern or bust" with a smiley face, and I realized I'd been warping rotors for half a decade. Anyone else have a facepalm moment where a simple paper or a customer comment made you change a habit?

Hang on, wait, five years? Five whole years of doing them in a circle and nobody said anything? That's wild. I would have just kept going too if nobody's wheels fell off or made a weird noise. The customer's receipt with the little smiley face is what gets me, like they knew they were dropping some serious knowledge on you in the most casual way possible. Did you at least tell that customer they basically saved your career?

Clicked send on that comment before I could ask - did that customer ever come back after dropping that knowledge bomb on you? Seems like the kind of person who'd pop in just to check if you'd switched up your method. Five years is a long time to be doing something wrong without anyone catching it, makes you wonder how many other little things in that shop are getting done the exact same way every day just cause nobody asked about them.
