I tried the 'fast and light' thing on the John Muir Trail and it backfired

Everyone says to cut your pack weight to move faster, so I got my base weight down to 15 pounds for a 5 day section. I skipped my warm jacket and a proper rain layer to save ounces. On day three, a surprise storm hit near Evolution Valley and I got soaked and cold, forcing me to stop early and lose a whole day. I learned that being a little heavier with the right gear is better than being too light and unsafe. Has anyone else found that the ultralight advice doesn't always work in real mountains?

Yeah, people forget that advice is for IDEAL conditions. The mountains don't care about your spreadsheet. I always pack a real rain shell and a puffy, even in summer, because the weather can turn on a dime up high. That extra pound is my insurance policy.

Learned that the hard way last July.
