Shoutout to the random guy who showed me how to sharpen my lawnmower blade properly
Last weekend I was out in the garage trying to get my mower ready for spring and a neighbor walked over and saw me using a bench grinder totally wrong. He grabbed a file from his truck and spent about 15 minutes showing me how to balance the blade with a nail and a level (which I had hanging on the wall). I had been fighting with dull cuts for 2 years and never knew the blade was just out of whack. Has anyone else had a random backyard encounter that saved you a bunch of time?

Three years ago my neighbor Dave wandered over while I was trying to fix a leaky hose bib and ended up teaching me the trick of using a wine cork as a temporary washer (which I had a dozen of in the recycling bin). Saved me a trip to the hardware store and about 30 bucks, plus I felt like a genius for weeks. But honestly, I think the real lesson here is that strangers with nail files are secretly the unsung heroes of suburban life.
