Spent 3 hours on a logo that looked like a potato

I was working on a logo for a local coffee shop in Portland last month and somehow ended up with this shape that everyone kept saying looked like a baked potato instead of a coffee bean. My friend who runs the shop actually laughed when I showed him the first draft. I ended up scrapping the whole thing and starting over with simpler shapes. Has anyone else had a design totally miss the mark like that?

Oh man I've been there. Best advice I can give is to step away for a day and come back with fresh eyes, or show it to someone who won't be nice about it.

Whoa, hold on - did you say "won't be nice about it"? That sounds brutal! I'm picturing someone just tearing into your work without any filter (like how my uncle critiques my BBQ, which is painful but honestly helpful). I'd be scared to hand my stuff over to someone like that, but I guess you need that tough love sometimes. Maybe I need to find a friend who's not afraid to say "this part is garbage" instead of just nodding along.
