That moment I realized my kerning was just guessing

I was looking at a sign I made for a buddy's coffee shop and my wife goes 'why does that look like it says cof fee instead of coffee'. Three years of doing logos and I never once measured the space between letters, just eyeballed it.

Read somewhere that professional typesetters call it 'letterspacing' and actually charge extra for it.

My buddy Charlie paid a graphic designer 300 bucks to make a logo for his dog walking business, and the guy hit him with an extra 50 for "kerning adjustments." Charlie got all mad thinking he was getting scammed, but I looked it up and yeah, professional typesetters charge extra for that stuff. Its basically adjusting the space between letters so your text doesn't look all weird and jammed together. Like, if you ever see a sign where the letters look perfectly spaced out and easy to read, thats probably because someone got paid to tinker with it lol. I still think its wild that we have a whole separate charge for making letters not look like theyre fighting each other.
